About

Shelly Cook is a contemporary abstract artist based in Cornwall, UK.

Her practice began many years ago as a personal response to grief, through which she discovered the emotional power of colour, texture and surface. Over time, painting became a way of exploring how materials, memory and emotion interact, and how visual language can speak to parts of ourselves that are difficult to articulate.

Shelly is drawn to the quiet details found in the natural world: bark and lichen, wrinkles and scars, rust and decay, rocks and stones shaped by time. These elements reflect what she describes as nature’s alchemy a continual process of change, erosion and transformation. Themes of loss, memory, emotion and renewal are woven throughout her work, not as narratives, but as felt experiences held within the surface of each painting.

Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, Shelly’s process is intuitive and exploratory. Paintings often move through many stages, shifting and evolving before arriving at their final form. Rather than seeking visual perfection or decoration, her work embraces uncertainty and imperfection, allowing texture, mark making and chance to guide the outcome.

Her paintings are not intended simply to be pleasing to the eye. Instead, Shelly hopes they invite a moment of reflection, encouraging the viewer to connect with something internal, perhaps forgotten, but still present beneath the surface.

She is always developing her practice with the intention of undertaking an FDA in Art and Media. Her long term ambition is to work within creative and therapeutic environments, using art as a means of connection, reflection and emotional understanding.
